Will Smith: Still the Man, but probably not Captain america…
I have to admit that I am one of those fans of Will Smith movies that almost thinks that he can do no wrong, and I am sure that I am not alone in this belief. The closest he has come to taining my feelings towards him as a performer is when I learned that he was actively promoting Scientology on the set of one of his recent movies. (to be precise, he was seen handing out invites to a Scientology personality test that is used to get people in the door of the Scientology centers) This is why i usually try to distance the actor from his or her work. Sure there are times when the behaviour of the actor might just be too much for me to ignore and prevents me from any longer finding any enjoyment in their work, but these occasions are few and far inbetween. Honestly, even Will Smith’s past Scientology indiscretions have failed to put me off his work.
Heck, I am the kind of fan that thinks that Smith can almost do no wrong even when it comes to his choice of movie roles; I didn’t really have any problem with him in Hancock, I thought he was appropriately subdued in Seven Pounds, and I am sure he will be entertaining in his next announced project, the Last Pharaoh. The funny thing is that I am already reading on the interweb that the historical figure that he will be portraying was not even the last Pharaoh, that that honour actually goes to Cleopatra or someone. I have to admit though that I am somewhat dissapointed by one of the roles that Smith is reported to have turned down as of last Fall: when asked if he was in fact in the running to play iconic Marvel comicbook character Captain America in an upcoming big screen Captain America movie project, Smith was quick to shoot down the rumour that had been circulating at the time by confirming that he had no real interest in the project. Too bad, I bet he would have made that character interesting. Of course he would also have made the upcoming Cap movie a ‘Will smith movie’ more than a ‘Captain America movie’, so I am sure that there are some comic book fans out there that are quite happy with his decision…
